Our Teams

Advanced Practice Providers

A vital part of our care team, Geisinger’s Emergency Medicine APPs can expect the best development resources and training to thrive in their role. Geisinger’s Department of Advanced Practice Providers serves to support our Advanced Practitioners and Advanced Practitioner students through interdepartmental consultation, benchmarking of best practices, professional practice standards, compensation, personnel management, and care delivery models. In addition to a comprehensive range of benefits, candidates also receive a $20k recruitment incentive to join our team.

Pediatric Emergency Medicine

Our team is bringing top-notch Pediatric Emergency Medicine to rural communities across central Pennsylvania through an innovative approach to pediatric readiness. Our regional strategy leverages Pediatric Emergency Medicine specialist knowledge and skills to support our outstanding Emergency Medicine colleagues in caring for children across our 9-bed hospital system. We use telemedicine, clinical guideline development with electronic health record integration, pediatric equipment standardization, clinical tool development, education and simulation initiatives, participation in national collaboratives, local and regional quality improvement, an amazing system Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator, and a regional, multidisciplinary Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator (PECC) council to help deliver high quality care at diverse emergency departments across a large geographic distribution.
Central to the coordination of pediatric emergency care within our system is the colorful, 9-bed “Peds Zone” in the Emergency Department at the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital at Geisinger Medical Center (Pediatric Emergency Room | Geisinger) in Danville, PA. The “Peds Zone” will be expanding to a 14-bed unit in the next few years with the completion of a critical care tower expansion project (GMC Expansion | Geisinger | News Release"). The Janet Weis Children’s Hospital (Janet Weis Children’s Hospital & CHOP | Geisinger) at Geisinger Medical Center is a 90-bed children’s hospital with a 14-bed PICU and 41-bed NICU that provides a comprehensive range of pediatric services including a full array of medical and surgical pediatric subspecialties. We are also establishing a second hub for Pediatric Emergency Medicine at the Geisinger Wyoming Valley Hospital Emergency Department in Wilkes-Barre, PA.
In addition to providing outstanding bedside care and coordinating pediatric emergency care throughout our system, our team is very involved in resident education, national collaboratives, and research. We work closely as faculty to teach and mentor Pediatrics, Med/Peds, Emergency Medicine Residents, and medical students through the Geisinger Commonwealth Medical School (Geisinger College of Health Sciences).

Ultrasound

Collaboration and knowledge sharing are top-of-mind here. We offer system-wide clinical ultrasound administration opportunities, where everyone can collaborate across departments. There’s also a monthly multidisciplinary image review conference with different departments like Critical Care, Cardiology, and Sports Medicine. Our teams conduct weekly QA of images obtained in the emergency department, used to develop ultrasound quality improvement projects. Other perks include a one-year Accredited Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship within the Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship Accreditation Council, based at GMC (Danville, PA), as well as archiving and quality assurance services.

Research

Our research team works closely with the EM residency program leadership to improve resident training and foster healthy intellectual dialogue. In 2023, our Emergency Department published 21 peer-reviewed articles and three book chapters/textbooks and presented our work at 70 scientific conferences. System-wide, we had >$57 million in external grant and contract revenue, >1,400 active research projects, including clinical trials, and >1,090 publications.

EMS

We’re proud of our robust emergency medical services program that includes nine state-of-the-art Geisinger Life Flight® helicopters stationed at six bases and two Critical Care Ground Transports.

Education

At Geisinger, ‘learning’ is one of our core values. Fortunately, our environment is uniquely suited, with diverse pathologies, patient populations, and acuities, to educate the best and brightest minds in medicine, including Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine students and Geisinger Emergency Medicine residents. We are excited to expand our graduate medical education of EM residents with our second EM residency program based at Geisinger Wyoming Valley in Wilkes-Barre, PA (coming in 2026). Our first program, established in 1976 at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, PA, is one of the oldest of its kind and maintains full accreditation from the ACGME Residency Review Committee.

System Triage Officers

When our ED patients need expedited transfers within the health system, we rely on our System Triage Officers (STOs) to help make it happen. Geisinger’s STOs are Emergency Medicine physicians who work virtually to ensure proper patient movement throughout the health system.

Trauma

Our trauma centers provide immediate care for patients with severe or life-threatening injuries. Geisinger Medical Center and Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center are Level 1 trauma centers, equipped to provide the highest level of trauma care to those who are critically ill or injured. Emergency medicine physicians at Geisinger have significantly broadened their influence both within and beyond the emergency department by serving in other key leadership and strategic roles, including Hospital Chief Medical Officers, Utilization Management Review, Information Technology, Population Health, Employee Health, Geisinger Health Plan, and various Hospital and System Quality Committees.

Geisinger’s Emergency Medicine Advanced Practice Providers play a vital role in the care of the system’s ED patients and are valued for our contribution. The nature of our work allows for flexible scheduling with few nights – which means I’m engaged at work but also at home. I am trusted to work independently and enjoy the camaraderie of working alongside a skilled multidisciplinary team. Our APPs are given opportunities to explore passions like teaching, administration, and more. We are also represented at the system level by our esteemed Advanced Practice Council, on which I’m proud to serve! If given the opportunity, I’d choose Geisinger again (and again).

I was attracted to the work Geisinger was doing to improve the quality of emergency care children receive in north central PA. They are at the cutting edge and national experts in Pediatric Readiness, and I was excited to join the team. Additionally, I love teaching both pediatric and emergency medicine residents at the bedside and in formal academic settings.

One of the projects I am most proud of is related to both emergency medicine and informatics. We worked for more than a year to standardize our ED provider note template and to reduce documentation burden for providers. The note is now used more than 20,000 times a month and we successfully reduced the note length by 40%.
