Trauma Surgeon | Level II Trauma Center | Acute Care Surgery | Scranton, PA Join a growing Trauma and Acute Care Surgery program in Northeast Pennsylvania where you'll practice the full spectrum of trauma surgery, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care while helping shape the continued growth of a busy Level II Trauma Center. Geisinger is seeking a Board Certified/Board Eligible Trauma Surgeon with Surgical Critical Care training to join our growing Acute Care Surgery team at Geisinger Community Medical Center (CMC) in Scranton, Pennsylvania. CMC is a Level II Trauma Center serving Scranton and communities throughout Northeast Pennsylvania.

Job Duties

This is an exciting opportunity to join a busy, established trauma program experiencing sustained growth in both trauma volume and trauma activations. The successful candidate will practice across the full spectrum of Acute Care Surgery, including trauma surgery, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care, while joining a collaborative team committed to providing high-quality care to critically ill and injured patients.

Practice Highlights

• • Practice at an established Level II Trauma Center serving Northeast Pennsylvania
  • Provide comprehensive Trauma Surgery, Emergency General Surgery (EGS), and Surgical Critical Care
  • Care for patients across the continuum, including the emergency department, operating room, intensive care unit, inpatient setting, and outpatient follow-up
  • Participate in a dedicated Emergency General Surgery service
  • Manage trauma activations, acute surgical consultations, and critically ill surgical patients
  • Opportunity to maintain a limited elective surgical practice focused primarily on continuity of care for existing patients, including procedures such as colostomy reversals and hernia repairs
  • Participate in the program's expanding wound and burn care services
  • Join an established multidisciplinary team focused on providing accessible, high-quality acute surgical care
  • Practice within Geisinger's integrated health system with access to specialists and subspecialists across the organization

Growing Trauma Program

CMC's Trauma Program continues to experience sustained demand, with trauma patient volume increasing from 1,415 patients in 2023 to 1,794 in 2025, with 2026 volume annualized at approximately 1,797 patients.

Trauma alert activity has also grown significantly, increasing from 3,657 alerts in 2023 to 4,261 in 2025, with 2026 annualized at approximately 4,187 alerts.

This continued growth creates an excellent opportunity for a trauma surgeon who wants to join a clinically active program and contribute to the continued development and sustainability of trauma and acute care surgery services across Northeast Pennsylvania.

Position Responsibilities

• • Provide comprehensive evaluation and surgical management of injured and acutely ill surgical patients
  • Respond to trauma activations and emergency surgical consultations
  • Perform operative and non-operative management of trauma and emergency general surgery patients
  • Provide surgical critical care for complex and critically ill patients
  • Participate in the Trauma/Acute Care Surgery call and coverage schedule
  • Support appropriate outpatient and postoperative continuity of care
  • Collaborate with Emergency Medicine, Critical Care, General Surgery, surgical subspecialists, nursing, advanced practice providers, and other members of the multidisciplinary care team
  • Participate in trauma performance improvement, quality initiatives, and program development
  • Support the continued growth of trauma, emergency general surgery, surgical critical care, wound, and burn services

Qualifications

• • Board Certified or Board Eligible in General Surgery
  • Fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care/Trauma Surgery
  • Eligible for medical licensure in Pennsylvania
  • Commitment to high-quality, patient-centered trauma and acute care surgery
  • Strong collaborative and communication skills
  • Interest in education, quality improvement, clinical research, and program development welcomed
